Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Utah

Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Utah was founded in 1942 when six hospitals formed the Intermountain Hospital Plan (IHP).

Two years later, a physicians’ group began an active sales campaign with IHP to offer both physician and hospital benefits. Within two years there were 100,000 enrollees.

By 1966, BlueCross BlueShield of Utah became involved with IHP as the administrator for Medicare Parts A and B.

Today, the organization known as Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Utah is the state’s leading healthcare company. It serves more than 400,000 members throughout Utah with 857 employees and 3,950 in-network providers. The company processes 410,000 claims per month and paid out almost $723 million in claims in 2003.

Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Utah’s operating expense ratio — 9.3 percent — is one of the lowest in the nation among health insurers.

The company's health insurance plans include co-pay plans (under which you pay a specified dollar amount for each office visit); co-insurance plans (under which you pay a specified percentage of alls services); and a high-deductible health insurance plan that makes you eligible for the Regence health savings account (HSA), which allows you to set aside tax-free money to fund your deductible and other qualified medical expenses.
