Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield of New York was founded in 1935. Today, it has almost five million members, and is the largest health insurer in New York based on PPO and HMO membership.

The company serves eastern and southeastern counties of New York and 10 contiguous counties in New Jersey and Connecticut, although Empire members have access to providers across the country through local BlueCross and/or BlueShield plans.

The company offers a number of PPO and HMO plans. Its newest product, Empire Total BlueSM, is a high-deductible health insurance plan designed to work with tax-advantaged health savings accounts (HSAs).
