On December 11, 1946, the South Carolina Hospital Service Plan later to be renamed BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina received its charter. Today, BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina has more than 12,000 employees and serves nearly one million people.

- a short-term health insurance plan, which is designed for individuals who find themselves between jobs or waiting for permanent employer-sponsored coverage; and
- Medicare supplement insurance, which is designed for people who want supplemental coverage to fill gaps in their Medicare coverage.
